Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine donate $70 million to USC to create a new arts, technology and business program.

Up until about two days ago when the news was released I had been deeply considering business school at a top University. I wasn’t ever really thinking just “best business school”. If I actually take the time to study my butt off for the whole shebang, I’m going big or not going at all. However, while the news is still very fresh and program details are not yet ready, I would DEFINITELY consider going back to USC for anything that these two are involved in.

The new USC program funded by top record producer, rapper and entrepreneur Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine; famous music producer, entrepreneur and Co-Founder of Interscope Records and Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M will start with 25 students which they will start recruiting in the Fall. The Program- The Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation.

Obviously they will be looking for the best and the brightest. And the reason for the program? Both feel similar to the reason behind Dr. Dre’s successful headphone line, it is something that is needed amongst the students and kids today. This generation’s modern language is technology, which translates over into music, movies, video games etc. It all encompasses and translates into one thing today.

“It is a very different model that has incredibly strong creative skills, and yet they are able to handle the technology, because they have to be. They create differently, they disseminate what they do differently, they market themselves differently.”

Both Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine are most excited about what they are about to create. A specialized area for students to understand music rather than just technology. In their interview with Rolling Stones, they take a highly regarded company; Apple for example, which was founded in the culture of technology and liberal arts.

The program will open in 2014 and their hopes? For the graduating class of 2018 to leave and create something that they have no concept of yet or to be engaged in a career that they can’t even imagine yet.

Cheers again to the next ones, I can’t wait to see how this program will evolve. So proud to be a Trojan, and so excited to see what is curated from this class.

Fight On!

It’s like wearing jelly’s during the summer, but this season it’s all about the clear purses and totes. Sure, it’s something you have to get used to; your personal belongings being out there in the open, but these clutches are all to die for. I love how the colorful world has swept our accessory world, but I’m looking for something new. I haven’t quit decided which clear purse I am going to land on, but I have been siding towards the Nasty Gal Neon Summer Clutch. Also haven’t decided which color. Many of you may say, “Duh, its Alexis we’re talking about… PINK” but I already have SO much pink. I kind of wish this one came in a bright orange to switch it up, but oh well. All of these bags are great for beach, work, going out (the smaller ones) and will help you carry summer all the way through to October. What’s a little sand in your bag that everyone can see? Hot.

There’s something about being a millennial, or as they call us- the “next ones”. I think we have it a lot harder for a number of reasons, but as millennials the best part is we have the ability to reinvent everything around us. We fall into a culture where we don’t HAVE to follow after our peers or our parents. The mold for what and who we should be has disappeared. I think this article is amazing, one part in particular I have below. Dating as a millennial. As a millennial, what do you lie about…? Your alcohol consumption? How swamped you are at work? or maybe your sports knowledge??

From BroBible “10 Things Millennials Are Incredibly Good at Lying About”

7. Acting Like The Dating Game Is ‘Hopeless’

Remember when you applied to college, and decided that you’d just assume you wouldn’t get in anywhere, so that if you did you’d be pleasantly surprised? Perhaps this is the long-term effect of studying hours and hours to get decent grades only to get rejected from your dream college, but this is the same way many millennials are approaching dating. Problem is, college is aggressive in the sense that it uses a bunch of Malcolm Gladwell theories to decide if you’re “great” or not in under five seconds. People are not.

Courtship protocols aside, if both sexes take the “lower your expectations route,” you’re naturally gonna move away instead of toward. Guys have no incentive to court girls, and girls have no incentive to attempt to move closer to guys. Everyone turns into LIT in 1999.

And just because I work in television and am all about promos, although this is not related directly with the article above it’s my favorite promo regarding millennials. I think we all lie about these things in the article above because, truly- we have a lot on our plate. We’re living up to standards previous generations didn’t have to live up to. We have a lot to carry, so have fun on the weekend, don’t worry about dating as much as you think you should and be ok with less sleep and maybe not remembering the books you read in 6th grade.

Every season they will have one shoe that is a limited edition that always goes pretty fast but ends up being a year round wear. The seasons are changing very soon so for men it is hard to tell what to buy at this exact moment, but for women, these Tom’s shoes are sure to go great now and then for the rest of winter, spring and summer!

This article “The End of Courtship” is quite possibly the best article written in regards to dating for generation Y. As my roommate said yesterday, ”If I had a highlighter I would have highlighted the entire article”. Just last night a guy I met about a month ago texts me at 11:15 p.m. saying “hey”… Hey what?? Hey, you’d like to talk? Hey, you just broke your leg? Hey, are you awake? What??? It’s the most irritating thing in the entire world. I think I’d rather get a call than a text this late at night, but considering guys appear as if they are socially incapable of calling a girl these days, I might be on the fast track to single-dom forever.

Another one of my girlfriends met a guy on New Years; they talked all night and even got a kiss in. He texted her constantly for the next week, but his answers fell pretty short of what we thought he was actually looking for. When she asked him questions like what he liked to do on the weekend, his response was “I like to get aggressive”. We were both wondering– as in you like to mosh around? Or is it that you like to get angry? If a guy asked a girl this question, it would the same as her replying “I like to get slutty”. Hmmm… what? You like to get slutty on the weekends? Makes complete sense.

Thus far, I can honestly say that I’ve only DATED one guy who truly and honestly DATED me. To start, he was one of the first guys that brought me flowers for no special reason. A guy that picked me up for each date, made future plans with me before the date ended and planned something out. I’m not just talking about dinner or dinner and a movie, I’m talking about dates that took a little effort and thinking. One date in particular, this guy took me to the Malibu Getty Villas, then to a seafood restaurant overlooking the ocean. This restaurant allowed you to bring your own wine, and you better believe he planned ahead and brought a bottle! It’s the little things. Maybe it’s the fact that you can’t find a guy anymore that is willing to work for you. A guy that WANTS to impress you. Did I mention he didn’t have any physical expectations from the start? I know, SHOCKING. Guys don’t take girls out anymore because they are interested, but because they are hoping to receive in the end. However, this guy I went out with took his time. At one point I asked all my friends if they thought he was new and inexperienced at this. Come to find out he wasn’t, he just had more respect for me and saw what we had going evolving into a relationship rather than a hookup. These guys are a dime a dozen, almost IMPOSSIBLE to find today. As in the article, it’s not an issue of meeting guys out, but figuring out where to go from there.

You meet a guy in a bar, through friends, out or at work. They get your number and text you. They aren’t agressive. They don’t try to follow up to see you. You would think they had millions of other options. However, from what I have heard from my guy friends, this isn’t the case. I have one guy friend who is successful, good looking, smart, funny and plans the best dates, but he tells me each and every day how over girls he is. They aren’t worth taking out because they are either boring, slutty or the opposite, stringing him along but not really giving him any cheese.

If you haven’t already done so read this AMAZING L.A. Times Article “The End of Courtship” HERE.

“Dating culture has evolved to a cycle of text messages, each one requiring the code-breaking skills of a cold war spy to interpret.”

“It’s one step below a date, and one step above a high-five,”

“Women in their 20s these days are lucky to get a last-minute text to tag along. Raised in the age of so-called “hookup culture,” millennials — who are reaching an age where they are starting to think about settling down — are subverting the rules of courtship.”

“Instead of dinner-and-a-movie, which seems as obsolete as a rotary phone, they rendezvous over phone texts, Facebook posts, instant messages and other “non-dates” that are leaving a generation confused about how to land a boyfriend or girlfriend.”

Men in blazers… It doesn’t get much better than that. Maybe I am speaking solely for the west coast, as I have noticed there are too few men that rock these out here. If you go to New York, that is all guys wear. It could quite possibly be the hottest thing. From a girls point of view, men that wear blazers command authority and attention. They are typically very secure with themselves and the life of the party. They have a great sense of style and are with it. Ladies: You know those guys playing boozy doge ball on Saturday morning with their best friends? I guarantee those guys do not own blazers.

Let’s just take one of my favorite examples for a moment. Don Draper. If only these men still existed everywhere! They are hard to come by. They are ALL male, they take charge, they know what they want, they realize what they have and they take risks. They literally give you goose bumps. Isn’t that what all of us ladies secretly deep down want to find in a man?

Guys; I have seen tall, short, skinny, fat, stocky, muscular and wide guys all rock them. Sure, it does depend on the cut, and I think it also really depends on the pants you are wearing and shoes, but just about any guy can do it, and in the end, guys in blazers are just SO much hotter. Nothing compares.

The Right Blazer

If you are tall: Whether you are slim or stocky— if you are tall rock a blazer with FITTED jeans. This does not mean go out and get wide legged boot cowboy pants. I recently bought my dad some Joe’s jeans for Christmas that were fitted and he actually looked thinner than in his normal Levi’s. My dad is in great shape, takes care of himself and is tall so when he put on the new fitted jeans, he looked almost 15 pounds lighter. Make sure your pants reach the BOTTOM of your shoes. If you are tall and have pants that are even an inch above the ground, your legs will look short, adding to your overall weight.

If you are short: Do not get super fitted jeans, the shorter you are and the tighter your jeans, the smaller you are going to look. Go for a dark jean or darker trouser. Sometimes tan slacks on short people make us (yes I am short) appear wide. Go for jeans that gather a little bit at the bottom, not just a straight boot cut. Boot cut jeans or trousers are the WORST on short people. If you also get high waisted pants and just tuck in your shirt it gives you two or so inches to work with.

If you are slim: Get the blazer a little more fitted, but make sure you are still able to roll up or push up the sleeves on the blazer.

If you are stocky: If you have wide shoulders or a bigger chest, it is harder to get just the right fit for blazers and suits but the key is making sure you don’t get it too long, because the longer it is the bigger you will look if you have a stocky body. Please guys make sure you can button it in the front! When trying on, imagine you have a notebook attached to your chest and then button over that. You need a solid inch or two of extra room inside.

Assets = Partners + Property

And guys say that it’s hard to find the right GIRLS in Los Angeles. Being a female in your twenties your pickings are slim. You typically have to target males over thirty because at that point there is a higher chance of finding a man who is intellectually and physically as mature and stable as you are. It’s rare that I come across a girl in her twenties who is with a guy her same age or younger. For males, you can go for the younger ones and older.

However, the one thing both male and female have in common while dating? Finding the perfect match. Getting the right man or woman is like buying a car or house. Let’s go for the house, assuming we’re all looking for an asset, something to come home to, something to share and something to invest your time and money into. When you buy a house, just like dating, the more you visit (more dates you go on) the easier it gets. You’re able to really hone in on what it is that you are looking for (whether it be house or condo/ boyfriend or husband). Finally, one day you come across a catch. At that point it’s not hard to see that all the qualities you’ve been looking for are right in front of you.

So you find the house (partner) of your dreams. You then have to make an offer (in dating this would be a compromise). It is what you think they are worth. In your house, can you deal with not having a backyard or an extra bathroom? In dating, Are they worth moving for? Are they worth waiting (sex) for? Are they worth putting money up for (unemployment/ disability)? You have to ask yourself these questions, if they aren’t, they probably aren’t the one you are really meant to be with (the home you are supposed to buy). Then there is the whole process of inspections before the offer is finalized, in dating this would be moving in together, introducing the significant other to family or if you are a parent your kids. Obviously, with any house you buy, you want it to be inspected for mold, damage, or any other issues you may not be able to fix later, or will take too much time, money and energy.

There isn’t any real part of this whole dating that is anything near easy. It is very, very difficult for both sides, men and women of all ages, single forever, bad breakup, divorced, widowed etc. However the one thing you can always count on is that for each date you go on, each new partner you take out, you will walk away knowing more; more about yourself and what in the end is best for you. You absolutely have to take it as an experience.

My most recent experience? A third wheel date with an international model man. Last week my roommate and I are sitting at Pink Taco in West Hollywood grabbing some happy hour. We’re catching up on our week when one of the two guys sitting next to us asks if he can get some dating advice. He asks for some suggestions on where to take a girl on their date. I tell him it depends on how many dates they have been on, what her limitations are and what he is trying to get out of it. I gave him my best advice and he ran with it and skipped out to go on his date. Meanwhile my roommate was hitting it off with his friend. They exchanged numbers and we left.

The next day they arranged to meet up for drinks after work. He had mentioned his friend would be coming after dinner– perfect. My roommate and the guy met at the Belmont, I had some stuff going on so walked over a little while after.

Pretentious Pigs or Model Men

Let me forewarn you, I have been on a date now with just about every tool in the shed (haha), the lawyer, the bartender, the server, the actor, the accountant, the Disney character, the director, the snowboarder, the shoe designer, the investor and more. Yet, I have never been on as what I would call a third wheel date with a model. It was slightly worse than my date with “Mr. Lawyer”. At the time my roommate and I were completely blown away, now we look at it as a complete joke and can’t help but laugh.

To start, Mr. Model Man could barely take a breathe of air lending himself to talk about every aspect of his entire life. I can assure you he walked away from all of this only knowing my roommates name and maybe two fun facts about her life. I could have probably written a book about him. He complained about how uncomfortable Alexander McQueen clothing was, he physically turned my roommate’s head toward him when she was talking to me and claimed the other people at the table couldn’t hear her when she spoke faced-forward to me. He blew air in my face, as if he was blowing out candles when I told him I couldn’t hear him, THEN did it again when he asked me a question and I got the wrong answer. I know; I also wasn’t aware there were wrong answers when someone asked you about your life. And the FINALE! He tells excuses himself and lets us know he needs to take a call outside. Twenty minutes pass, thirty minutes, forty-five minutes…we finish our drinks, tell the waiter this guy is a walk out, close our bill and bounce.

(Yes, this is the closest resemblance to Mr. Model Man)

Side note: my roommate texts him after twenty minutes and says we are leaving to meet with other friends soon. No response. We make our way outside the bar and TA-DA! MR. MODEL MAN IS ON HIS PHONE OUTSIDE. He comes walking after us with a completely puzzled look on his face. There was nothing more or less to say to Mr. Model Man. It was very clear, we had just gone on a date with the most pretentious, self-indulged, rude and pathetic pig on the black market. I wouldn’t take him if he was on sale for 99% off!

The highlight and lesson at the very end was an hour or so later when he did finally text my roommate back….

Lesson learned- we all must go out with just one of these farm animals in our lifetime. He officially wins the gold muse for The “Most Likely to Be Single Forever”.

While some of you ladies choose to wear heels to work (I commend you), I typically/always stick to flats, strappy sandals or low heeled boots. I work in Santa Monica, so we are lucky enough to have a pretty casual vibe going. ALSO, in a recent encounter in my boss’ office, my findings? Heels are to blame for chronic back problems and postural difficulties… and much more (see photo below). You can take it or leave it. Either way, over the holidays I found my newest go-to flats, perfect for winter, fabulous for spring and HOT for summer. These babes are made by my favorite, Sam Edelman called the “Leighton” flats. I recently bought in the ‘Wild Lime Snake’ color.

If Men and Women Switched Roles in the Gym...

It doesn’t matter what city you live in or what gym you go to. The typical male/female stereotype can be seen at just about any gym. For me, I used to go to the 24 Hour fitness in West Hollywood. Let’s just say the guys at this gym were exact replica’s of the guys in this video… occupying most of their time looking at their asses, dancing or chatting at very high volumes. I recently switched to Equinox in West Hollywood which falls at an arm distance from this video, except you can throw in women working out with their Chanel handbags and guys who’s arms look as if they are just about ready to explode. It’s a good look no doubt.

I thought this post was very appropriate being that:

#1. The Victoria Secret Fashion Show is tonight. We all know we will watch and immediately regret having eaten for the past 3 months.

#2. We’re moving into our favorite yet worst season of the year. Whatever it takes to get you fit and active during this season do it. You can’t put a price tag on a healthy, lean body. Hence why I recently started making major sacrifices to enroll at Equinox. It’s a pretty penny, but if it get’s you there in the morning, it is well worth it!

Whatever you do, make sure you never look like this in the gym… male OR female— and YES, that is an iPad
